Well, on my file, I chose Cyndaquil and here's why:
Besides the fact that Typhlosion is a fantastic Pokemon, because you can defeat most of the gyms fairly easily i.e; Bird, Bug, Grass, Electric, Normal, and even Dark/Ghost.. also they pair well with flying types, electric types, and even water types (I'm just going off what I do in my game.)
With choosing Totodile: You wont do as good as some of the gyms i.e; Electric, Grass, Bug, or Dragon.
With choosing Chikorita: You really won't get an advantage with the gyms until the water gym. Grass types are harder to train also and none of their grass type attacks are super effective against anything besides a water Pokemon.
Those are just some things about each of the starter Pokemon (again, I am just going off of what I think. I'll let you decide which one you want to chose. Just keep these hints in mind.)
