Along with Romilda Vane, Cormac McLaggen is shown as an unsympathetic (or dislikeable) Gryffindor character. His Gryffindor bravery is both a strength and a flaw: he is foolhardy and proud, bordering on arrogant. Rowling introduced him to represent the recurring themes of good and evil, and how blurry the line often becomes (he is juxtaposed against Slughorn, the first known "good" Slytherin.) Rowling said she named the character McLaggen simply because she liked the surname. He is sooo selfish!!
