What is the facts in the lightning thief?

The Lightning Thief (and the rest of the Percy Jackson series) is based on Greek Mythology (and a little bit of Roman in the break-off series). All the characters are real, but Rick Riordan altered their personalities to fit his stories. For instance, Dionysus (I hope I spelled that right) is not really that nasty and drunk as seen in the series. It's quite the contrary if you read a Greek legend with him in it. And no, it is not true that any of the events occuring in the series happened in the past. Obviously, the modern characters are not from the past, although they may be loosely connected in some way to another hero.
