In the movie, you can tell Mulan is being forced to be someone she's not. Her family wants her to be one thing and she wants to be another. She's expressing he feelings, trying to figure out just what exactly she wants to be.

look at me,

i will never pass for a perfect bride,

or a perfect daughter,

can it be,

I'm not meant to play this part,

now i see,

that if i were truly to be myself,

i would brake my family's heart.

who is that girl i see,

staring straight,

back at me,

why is my reflection someone i don't know,

somehow i can not hide,

who i am,

though I've tried,

when will my reflection show who i am inside,

when will my reflection show who i am inside.

My interpretation of the character Mulan is that she is a young Chinese woman who does not play the role of a woman. She would be what we call a tom-boy. She has no sense of femininity whatsoever. It's made clear in the Matchmaker section. By adhering to the traditional role of the Chinese woman - quiet, obedient, and completely submissive, almost like a slave, to the husband figure -, Mulan feels awkward, unnatural, and finally embarrasses herself and her family. This is where the song "Reflection" comes in.

When you look at a reflection, you are looking at a photographic copy, exactly the same as the original in all of its looks. Shadows, blemishes, color, proportion, etc. When you look at your reflection, you are looking at yourself. The song "Reflection" then addresses one thing: Mulan's reflection in mirrors and on the lake is not the reflection that she wants to see.

Mulan is being forced to play a role she is not suited to. She does not feel like herself when she looks in the mirror, especially when she is forced to take the role of a traditional Chinese woman like she did in this scene. The song is solely about how she wants her reflection to show what she really is - a strong, independent woman with a warrior's heart, rather than the traditional, everyday housewife. It's a sad song, though, because she knows that the minute her reflection does show who she really is, then her family's name will be shamed for eternity for breaking the traditions of the time period.
