Will Smith costars in this film with his own son, young Jaden Smith. The movie brings a unique feel to the big screen as it dives into the struggles of everyday life of the common poor of America. The story is based on the remarkable success story of a once estranged salesman by the name of Christopher Gardner. His role is played by Will Smith.
Smith's performance is nothing short of brilliant. This kind of movie wouldn't work if the lead character couldn't win over the audience. America wouldn't accept it, it'd be too depressing. The movie, clearly intended to be inspirational, succeeds in every way due to Smith's ability to convey the true horrors of poverty and the overwhelming powers of hope.
Despite the many obstacels thrown his way Christopher Gardner (Will Smith) continues on his quest for happyness in order to provide a better life for his son and for himself. Starting out as a failing salesman he chooses to follow his dreams no matter how hard the fight. And, the fight wasn't easy. He lost his wife and he had to go through most of it as a homeless man. But, all the time he had his son by his side.
Jaden Smith does a wonderful job of playing Chris Gardner Jr. Young Jaden shows the world that he too, like his father, can win over any audience with his boyish ways and charming personality. The remarkable thing about it is the perseverance that his character shows through the whole thing. You can't help but be amazed by th young child's ability to cope and survive by the side of his struggling father.
Gardner (Will Smith) not only fills the role of a goal-oriented professional but also as a caring and loving father. Not once does he place himself before his son. Throughout the movie and all their struggles he always maintains enough composure to make sure that his son is taken care of as much as possible. And, sometimes that means tough love.
"You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you that you can't do it. You want something? Go get it. Period."
In one of the most inspirational scenes in the film Christopher Gardner tells his son, better yet demands that he protects his dreams and chases them to whatever extent possible. The persona and passion of Smith's character jumps out of the screen at this point and grabs the viewer firmly by the top of the shoulders and manages to tug on the heart as well. If you see this movie and you can't feel what I'm talking about check your pulse, because you might be dead.
The final scene is perhaps the most touching and I'm not going to say any more because I don't want to blow it for thos that haven't seen it. But, it's worth the watch and don't be surprised if you shed a tear in the end. Not to worry though it'll be a tear of sheer happyness.
Work hard and stay determined and you'll rise to the top.
