SmallVille!!
The -ville ending comes from the same root as "village". It's not surprising that a lot of cities have names sayingthey're a city, or at least a populated place of some sort.
It may seem odd that a city like Louisville KY with a population of three-quarters of a million people refers to itself with a word meaning "village", but it didn't start out that large, and by the time it grew to its present size the name was already well-established.
Other endings with essentially the same meaning are -polis (Greek for "city"), -burg/burgh/borough/boro (which come from a German word meaning "fort"), and -town/ton (obvious, one hopes). There's also plain old "City", as in Oklahoma City and Jefferson City.
Somewhat rarer (in the US, at least) is -ham (related to "hamlet" and "home").
