Penultimate Peril is the book following The Grim Grotto. The three Baudelaire children end up the Hotel Denouement, where they deal with the triplets Ernest, Frank, and Dewey. Olaf hints that the Baudelaire's parents had something to do with the poison darts that were used to kill Olaf's parents. Olaf shoves a gun into the hands of the children, who drop it. The gun impales Dewey, who dies thinking of Kit Snicket, who carries his child. Count Olaf and the children are then locked in separate rooms of the hotel until the trial. In the trial, everyone except the judges are blindfolded ("justice is blind"). The other justices turn out to be villains and Justice Strauss was kidnapped. Olaf reveals his murderous scheme and Sunny suggests burning down the hotel. The children ride a boat with a sheet parachute off the building and ride away as the Hotel Denouement burns.
