Plot of Pinocchio

In the Disney adaptation, the story is about a poor old man who made a wooden puppet, a puppet whose goal is to become a real boy. Pinocchio is given life by a blue fairy and the blue fairy hires a cricket whose name was Jimminy as Pinocchio's conscience. So every time Pinocchio does something, Jimminy must keep an eye on the puppet and tell him what's right and wrong. But Pinocchio ignores Jimminy sometimes... so he ends up in trouble. However Jimminy seems to rescue him and so does the blue fairy... but only once (when he was trapped in a cage).

When Pinocchio lies, his nose grows long and the only way to shorten it in to tell the truth. After Pinocchio gets caught by evil people and runs away to safety, he returns home and tries to find his father, the old man who made Pinocchio. However, he realises that his father was eaten by a big whale and so goes to rescue him. They end up on a shore after they were coughed out by the whale. Pinocchio seems to have died rescuing his dad but the blue fairy restores him to life and changes him into a real boy.

In the book: Pinocchio was made by a poor puppet maker who doesn't like children much. He nevertheless gets attached to the boy and tries to send him to school and even sells his only coat to buy him a textbook. The next day, Pinocchio leaves for school but on the way he finds a poster on a wall about the puppet show. So he sells his books for a ticket to the show. During the show, the other puppets greet Pinocchio and this disrupts the play so the Director gets angry and wants to use Pinocchio as firewood. However, Fire Eater (the Director) feels sorry for the boy and lets him go, not before giving him five gold coins for his father.

On the way home, Pinocchio meets a Cat and a Fox, who tell him about a Field of Wonders where money grows on trees and all he has to do is plant his coins there. He believes them and they go together. They spend the evening at an inn and although Pinocchio doesn't eat much he has to pay one gold coin for his companions' dinners, because they leave before he does, and tell him to meet them at the Field.

Pinocchio goes to the Field of Wonders alone, but on the way there he gets attacked by two Assassins. They're after his coins but he manages to bite off one of the attackers' hands (it was actually a cat paw) and runs away. He finds a house in the forest and tries to get help but the Assassins catch up with him and hang him from a tree.

The house where Pinocchio asked for help was inhabited by a fairy who takes pity on the puppet and asks her servants to get him, then sends for three doctors (an Owl, a Crow and a Talking Cricket) to save him. She then sends for Geppetto, but when Pinocchio goes out to meet him on the way, he meets the Fox and Cat again, and they convince him to go to the Field of Wonders, where he buries the remaining four coins and leaves. When he returns, there's no sign of his companions or the promised money tree. Not even his four coins!

Pinocchio goes to complain to the Judge who sends him to prison for four months and when he gets out he tries to steal a few grapes and is caught by the owner of the vineyard, who ties him and makes him his new watchdog. During the night, he is approached by Weasels who promise him a chicken if he lets them steal from his master, but Pinocchio warns the man who catches the thieves and lets him go as thanks.

After a lot of adventures, he gets reunited with the Fairy, who is now old enough to be his mother. He lives with her for a while, goes to school and even makes friends there and learns a lot. The Fairy plans a party for him, but the night before that he talks to one of his friends and leaves with him for the Land of Toys, where there's no school and every boy does whatever he pleases. They only enjoy their stay for a short while, because soon enough they're turned into donkeys and then sold. When a drum-maker wants to make a drum out of Pinocchio's skin, he tries to drown him but when he pulls him out of the water he is back to being a wooden puppet.

Pinocchio seeks his father and finds out that he's on a tiny boat about to be swallowed by a huge sea whale. He goes to rescue him and manages to do so, with a lot of effort. They go home but Geppetto is ill so Pinocchio has to work very hard and study in the evening by lamplight. He manages to raise 50 pennies for a new suit, but then he meets a Snail who tells him that the Fairy is sick and has no money. So he sends his 50 pennies and starts to work twice as hard, to earn more and help the Fairy.

That night, he dreams of the Fairy, who tells him that he's forgiven. In the morning, he finds a new suit next to the bed, and a purse with a note saying that the Fairy thanks him and returns the pennies. Inside there were 50 gold coins. He runs to Geppetto and finds him at work again, healthy and happy. He also looks in the mirror and discovers that he's changed completely, and is now a real boy.
