In the ruins of North America there are 12 districts & the capitol. Every year there is something called "The Hunger Games". They take 2 kids, between the ages of 12 & 18, from each district snd they bassically fight til death. It is also a live story.
In the ruins of a place known once as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 13 outlying districts. There are only 12 districts now, District 13 rebelled against the Capitol and was destroyed. Leaving some of the Districts hungry, the Capitol is harsh and cruel. They keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games; a fight till death on live television.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her twelve-year-old sister Prim's place in the Games. Katniss has a survival instinct, as her father died in a mining accident, and her mother became depressed and inactive, forcing the Katniss to fend for herself and her sister.
When her companion for the games is chosen, it's none other then Peeta Mellark, the bakers son who had given her bread when her family was going to starve. If Katniss is to win, she will have to start making choices that weight survival against humanity and life against love.

The Hunger Games is a three-book series with prominent themes of control and survival. The basic plot involves a 18 year old girl, Katniss who volunteers for the Hunger Games, a contest that takes place each year in which tributes from each district within the country of Panem (previously the United States) are forced to fight each other to the death. The winner gains fame and glory, as well as food for his/her district (starvation is a constant battle within the oppressed districts), among other rewards. Tributes from each of the twelve districts (isolated areas that are oppressed and controlled by the capitol, acting almost as slave labor, are chosen randomly from glass fish bowls. and then given to the capitol to fight each other. Each tribute must be a child, there are no adults within the games, and each reaping (the ceremony in which tributes are chosen) are supposed to be treated as a holiday, a time of festivities, further showing the absolute oppression and control of the capitol. Katniss, a girl who hunts illegally in the wood around District Twelve, also known as the Seam, volunteers for the Games after her twelve year old sister (the youngest possible age for a tribute) is chosen during th reaping. This means she takes her sisters' place in the Games, joining the fight to the death ( be advised, Katniss is the protagonist). However, her fellow tribute (2 tributes are selected from each District, one male and one female) Peeta Mallark, is the one boy from District Twelve that Katniss may or may not have a crush on, much to her fear, for she has grown up learning that emotions are dangers to her. This leaves a massive conflicts as Katniss is forced to both survive, and sort out her feelings...for her fellow tribute may just be one of the only people she has ever loved (aside for her sister and her deceased father). WE also learn later on, Peeta loves her too...
