Tancredi is a story by Barbara Alberti about a two-headed person. The story begins with the narrator speaking of Grandma Santini and the photos of her dead children. One such photo was of two children in a single frame, Tancredi. Tancredid was Grandma Santini's first child, born with two heads. When the child was baptized, the priest gave the child/children its name. Grandma Santini believed the child was meant to die early, so as the child lived through its first few months, she began to believe it was her duty to "help the child along to heaven" and attempted to kill the child several times. After each attempt failed, she left the baby's fate to God's will. As Tancredi grew, each head began to develop two very distinct personalities: the right head was good and controlled the right hand; the left head was evil and controlled the left hand. Each of the twins wished to wear different clothes suited to his personality; the only compromise was that each head could wear a different hat suited to his personality. As time wore on, the good twin quietly bore the ill behavior of the evil head, but after a horrifying vision of his impending doom in hell for the evil twin's actions committed with their shared body, the good twin attempted to purify their shared body. Enraged by the good twin's attempt, the evil twin used his control of their shared left hand to beat the good head and strangle his twin to death. As the good twin died, the evil twin felt regret for his actions and closed his brother's eyes and followed him shortly into death. The story ends with an interesting line:

"A few moments later, when the other head's death reached their single

heart, he too died, foregoing his final blasphemy because his brother couldn't

hear anything he said, or be annoyed by it."
