A masking fluid (there are many brand names) is painted onto your ground (surface you are painting on) as a resist to keep the "masked" areas paint free during the execution of the painting.

Once you are finished the mask is rubbed off, revealing the area of pristine ground. This technique is commonly used in watercolor paintings to keep areas of highlight clean.
