BERNARDO CARPIO

This corrido narrates the life and adventures of Bernardo Carpio, a young man gifted with extraordinary strength, as well as the secret and ill-fated romance between his parents, Count Sancho Diaz of Cerdeña, and Jimena, sister of King Alfonso of Spain. After learning from his foster father Don Rubio that he is of "ignoble" birth, Bernardo is invited by King Alfonso to the royal court and is knighted into the elite order of Santiago. Soon elevated to the rank of general after killing Don Rubio in a duel, Bernardo proves his worth by single-handedly defeating the invading armies of the infidel Emperor Carpio. Once he also conquers all of the Moorish monarch's nineteen castles, his defeat of Carpio is so absolute that the vanquished emperor gives him his name.

When Bernardo returns to Spain, he discovers that Alfonso-who hoped Bernardo would be killed in the battles against Carpio-has chosen a French prince to act as an interim ruler while Alfonso is away. Bernardo, already angry at Alfonso for refusing to reveal his parents' identity, leaves the royal court in fury, vowing to confront the king of France and find his real father and mother.

On his way to France, Bernardo prays that he will find his parents and suddenly receives a letter fallen from heaven. The letter tells him that his father, Don Sancho, has been blinded and incarcerated in the prison of Luna on King Alfonso's orders, while his mother, Doña Jimena, has been hidden in a convent. Once he has made the French king yield to him, Bernardo returns to Spain to free his parents. At the prison, Bernardo finally learns from his father that he was born before his parents could be married, and that Sancho and Jimena were never wed because Alfonso and Don Rubio, whom Jimena had spurned, conspired to keep the lovers apart. Don Sancho, however, dies as soon as he divulges this. Bernardo nonetheless determines to legitimize both his parents' marriage and his birth; covering his father's corpse, he leads everyone, including his mother and uncle, to believe that Don Sancho is still alive, but ill. The archbishop marries Sancho and Jimena. After the rites, Bernardo pretends that he has just discovered that Don Sancho has died. King Alfonso then begs for his sister's forgiveness before the grief-stricken Jimena returns to the convent.

Bernardo soon embarks on other adventures, seeking to destroy all pagan kingdoms and to battle enchanted creatures. One day, he sees lightning strike a statue of a lion. Desiring to outmatch the force of nature, Bernardo vows to find the lightning, but an angel appears and tells him that he can no longer follow it, for it has gone beyond two mountains that are crashing into each other. The angel also tells him that only it can reach the lightning. Bernardo retorts that he can go wherever the angel goes. The angel answers that Bernardo can attempt to do so if he wishes, then enters the opening between the mountains. Bernardo follows it. As soon as he steps into the opening, the mountains close in on him-and Bernardo Carpio is never seen on earth again.
