One of the plausible themes for Stitches, by Glen Huser would be the stereotypes which are opposed upon us by society. for example in the book Travis is bullied because he stands in contrast with society. By the things he likes which makes him different ( making puppet, sewing) the way he talks, walks. Different examples are given in the book to support this. When Travis decided to pursue fashion studies, he got called to the principals office. The principal was shocked and asked if he wanted to join home economics instead. But Travis said he wanted to sew. The principal replied that society has rules. These rules which are not written anywhere, but yet, all society follows. These rules are called the unwritten rules. "Gentry, told me not to worry, she told me to remember when girls weren't allowed to play on the school hockey team, and when they let them, they brought home more trophies then guys." The expectation that boys should play with action figure's, girls should play with barbies. That boys should pursue hockey, girls dance. It is because of these rules Travis was bullied, he wasn't as masculine as the other boys, his masculinity was always questioned throughout the book. The author giving as hints as to what Travis sexuality is. But she never explicitly tells us because, she wants us not to judge Travis on a mere stereotype. Like the bullies in this book did, but instead he wants us to sympathize with Travis, and judge him on his personality.

Hope this helps a bit! :)
