What is the tone of The Lightning Thief?

It depends on who that reader is, I guess. The Fellowship of the Ring can be pretty intense at parts, and other parts it makes me want to giggle (expecially first few chapters), it really depends on where you are in the book as well. Overall, it should make you feel excited, maybe thrilled by some of the happenings.

In Lord of the Rings, it is a multimedia movie, therefor, there are many different tones, i just finished learning about tone, so i would know. There is romantic, for all the parts of love in the entire series! Like when Arwin gives her necklace to Argorn! Yet there is also action for all the war, such as 'the last battle of middle earth in the third one! & sadness for all the death, such as in the first one when Gimli finds out that his cousin Balin is dead could go on forever, so lets move on! Actually i think i just about covered most of them, so if you need more, just ask!

In my own personal opinion, I believe the tone of The Lightening Thief is bittersweet, suspenseful, captivating, and mysterious.
