I've seen them go as high as $2900.00 and as low as $1500.00 on auctions. All depends on how big of a fan of "The Duke's" is bidding.
It's from the movie "Rio Bravo" and the actual line is delivered by John Wayne as Sheriff John T. Chance... "You want that gun? Pick it up. I wish you would"
I'm not sure if you are asking about a gun or a horse. His horse was sold shortly before his death in 1979. His extensive gun collection was in the care of his oldest son Michael. With Michael's death I think the collection is now in the John Wayne Museum where everyone can enjoy it.MOREI looked this up and found out Wayne gave his Colt SAA to a man by the name of Gary Hess who worked for him as an engineer in his DECO gas/oil company. Gary came up with a new method to extract natural gas. When Wayne told him he didn't know how to repay him Hess asked for the gun and Wayne gave it to him. In 2003 it was sold by Battlefield's to Dr. Robert W. Azar of Parkersburg, WV who still has it. Until I looked this up I would have guessed it was in the Wayne Museum too, but actually the story attached to the gun is pretty interesting.
The bar tender shot him in the back. Than Ron Howard shot the bartender and Wayne died in front of Ron Howard, but not before seeing Ron throw the gun away, leaving Wayne to take the blame, which is the way he wanted it.
The cartridge in the middle of John Wayne's belt was a .45-70. Early in the Duke's career he often worked on movies with old cowboys who were actually around when the west was still wild. One of them told Wayne that many of the old timers kept a larger .45-70 round in the middle of their gun belt so they would know when they had used up half of their regular bullets. John liked the idea and added that touch to his screen persona. The meaning of that one bullet , is that one bullet would do to settle the gunfight.

John Wayne had several guns. Which one?
The only "named" gun that John Wayne used is in the movie Big Jake. It's an "over/under" derringer named Betsy.

A coach gun is a double-barrel shot gun. It has barrels about 18 inches in length placed side by side. The term "coach gun" was termed in 1858 when regular coach service from Missouri to San Francisco began.
