According to the Dragon Ball Z timeline, Vegeta was born on Planet Vegeta in Age 732. He is the son of King Vegeta, which makes him the Saiyan Prince. If not for Frieza's involvement, Vegeta would have inherited the Saiyan throne.
Frieza was a feared space tyrant who expanded his empire by enslaving other races, purging marketable planets, and selling those planets to willing customers. He formed the Planet Trade Organization with his father, King Cold, and his brother, Cooler. Frieza approached King Vegeta and demanded that the Prince be enlisted in the Planet Trade Organization as a child soldier in exchange for the Saiyans' continued survival. The King reluctantly agreed, putting the needs of the whole before the life of his son.
From several of Vegeta's flashbacks and comments, it's clear that life as one of Frieza's soldiers wasn't pleasant. He was subjected to endless mockery by people more powerful than him. In addition, it isn't much of a stretch to assume that he was maltreated in ways that went beyond mere ridicule. We can surmise that beatings and torture were a daily slice of life for the Saiyan, leading to an incredible amount of psychological damage. It's no coincidence that the Prince is shown to have a shockingly high pain threshold during the Buu Saga. He had to grow a tough skin in order to survive amidst Frieza's ranks.
Frieza threatened to kill King Vegeta unless the Prince obeyed his every order. Vegeta did his best to preserve his father's life, but it was all for naught. In Age 737, Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta and murdered the King when he attempted to rescue his son. Little Prince Vegeta was only five years old when his kingdom, his father, and his people were ripped away from him.
So he clung to the legend of the Super Saiyan. It was his only hope for freedom and fulfillment. He lived beneath Frieza's thumb for twenty-four years before he learned about the Dragon Balls. At the age of 29, Vegeta arrived on Earth to confront Goku and the others and retrieve the Dragon Balls. And the rest, as they say, is history . . .
