It's kind of hard to explain. There's one hobbit named Smeagol, and his friend (Deagol) finds the one ring. Smeagol strangles him for it, and then gets corrupted by it (the ring), and turns into Gollum. However, sometimes he's able to control Gollum and be Smeagol, but usually he's Gollum, but can have conversations with Smeagol. So basically, he's a dude with split-personality disorder. Gollum/Smeagol doesn't really have a home, but when he finds the ring, he goes to a cave in the Misty Mountains, but leaves when the ring is stolen from him by Bilbo.
