Sally Jackson stated at the end of the book that Percy's quest helped her to learn that if she wanted to solve her problems she would have to find the courage inside her to do it herself. Rick Riordan was trying to teach a lesson on courage.
He originally told it to his son to say that ADHD and Dyslexia don't have to be weaknesses, because for a demigod, those are gifts. The movie stressed that point also. In simpler form, our greatest weaknesses can be our greatest gifts.
