Luke gives Percy a pair of flying shoes that were given to him by his father Hermes. Percy cannot use them because Zeus has a grudge against him and he wants to stay out of the sky-gods domain.
Flying shoes. He can't use them because the doesn't know how to use them.
That he was wearing the ( cursed ) flying shoes that Luke had given to him. Percy, being the son of Poseidon, wold be entering Zeus' air/domain, whic meant that Percy wouldn't be able to wear them. He gave them to Grover, and when they went to the Underworld, the shoes nearly dragged grover into Tartarus, but Percy and Annabeth saved him. Grover confuses everything he touches, even the curse on the shoes. If Percy had been wearing the shoes, he would have went straight into Tartarus.
Sorry to correct this, but Silena Beauregard didn't betray him. Luke did. Luke was really evil and framed him by hiding the bolt in the shield. That's the movie version of course. The book version is Luke gave Percy flying shoes that were meant to drag him through a black hole thing and send him to Hades and kill him. THAT'S the truth.
Luke gave the flying sneakers to Percy, hoping that he would get hurt. Percy gave them to Grover, having a bad feeling about them. The sneakers were uncontrollable.

ClimaxThe climax of the story is when the Master Bolt appears in his backpack. Thanks to Ares, Hades's Helm and the bolt appears in his backpack and he hardly gets out of the underworld alive. Luke had made the flying shoes that he gave Percy, but Percy then gave them to Grover because he didn't have a magical thing with him. The shoes made Grover speed to get the Underworld and Percy and Annabeth follow him. The anticlimax occured at the end of the story, when Percy gave Zeus back his Lightning Bolt, not that he took it in the first place, Hades did, wanting his helm back.
a scorpion, a sword called backbiter and flying shoes
He gets to Olympus in time before the Winter Solstice and returns the lightning bolt, figuring out that Ares had put the lightning bolt in his bag. Ares wanted to start a war and also because he was manipulated but tries not to admit it.
Maia is just the activation word for the flying shoes Luke gives to Percy. In Greek mythology, Hermes' mother's name is Maia, which may be why that's the activation word. It's not mentioned in the books, though.
