He is from a fantasy version of our Earth. This has been confirmed in one of the Japanese manuals for the classic games. His planet is supposed to be cartoony and somewhat futuristic compared to our version of Earth, not to be confused with the parallel Earth concept from Sonic X.

∙ 13y agoEarlier games and comics suggest that Sonic came from a planet known as Mobius, later on in future games was just called "Sonic's World" (Another name for Mobius in SEGA of Americas Sonic Bible from June 1991 is also called Sonic's World), so it can be assumed that Sonic and co. still live on the Planet Mobius with its own government and history.
