Unless you had originally planned on paired costumes, I don't think that you should react at all. It is a valid choice for a costume, and much, much easier to do than Mickey Mouse. If you want to pair your costume with his, you could find some clothes that would fit into the late 50s timeline or dress like Olivia Newton John herself. If you want him to match you instead, you are going to have to confront it directly rather than just expecting him to match you, and you are probably going to have to do a lot of the work helping him with his costume before he will agree to the challenge.
