Durin's Bane refers to a balrog that lives deep within the mines of Moria. A balrog is a demon with powers over fire and shadow. The Fellowship of the Ring comes up against this particular balrog in the second part of the first volume of The Lord of the Rings while they try to cross a bridge over a chasm that will allow them to escape. The outcome of this encounter is vital to the plot, so I won't tell any more, read the book for yourself!
