If you are seriously interested in auditions, you should find an agent and follow the trade magazines. Without an agent, most likely you would only be able to go to 'open auditions' for extras. People have said that an agent is needed for large role in the film. this is not true. Hundreds of child actors can get lead or supporting roles in film without an agent, not just getting extra roles. lead roles can be obtained by, as you say, auditions. Regardless of what you say, I would maintain that for the most part, you DO need an agent to get plum roles because those auditions are not usually open casting calls, they are most often closed auditions and to get a shot at one of those you need good representation. Open auditions are a great way to find new talent.
