He was going to be a beekeeper. He liked and admired their industry.
Beekeeping and a little writing
Holmes sent a telegram to the nearest telegraph office in Grimpen with explicit instructions that the other telegram to Barrymore is to be 'delivered into his own hand', which would have determined if Barrymore was at Baskerville Hall, but the postmaster did not follow the instructions.
the old woman claims the ring. then holmes hitches on to the back of her cab to follow her to learn that she had jumped off before her destination arrived. holmes said he was tricked because it must have been a young man in order for him to jump out of a moving cab without being noticed. the "old lady" was standing in front of holmes face to face in his home. how could holmes not tell that it was a young man. i cant imagine any way a young man can disguise himself as an old lady so well that the master of observation sherlock holmes could not even notice when standing just a couple feet from one another. maybe im missing something. i love this book but this detail is driving me crazy. thanks
Full name is John H. Watson. It was Dorothy Sayers who first speculated that the 'H' stood for Hamish because Watson's wife called him James in 'The Man With the Twisted Lip,' and Hamish is the Scottish form for James yet his middle name is never actually given in the Conan Doyle stories.
Following is Watson's explanation from the beginning of chapter 8: "From this point onwards I will follow the course of events by transcribing my own letters to Mr Sherlock Holmes which lie before me on the table. One page is missing, but otherwise they are exactly as written, and show my feelings and suspicions of the moment more accurately than my memory, clear as it is upon these tragic events, can possibly do." Then at the beginning of chapter 11 Watson writes: "The extract from my private diary which forms the last chapter has brought my narrative up to the 18th of October, a time when these strange events began to move swiftly towards their terrible conclusion. The incidents of the next few days are indelibly graven upon my recollection, and I can tell them without reference to the notes made at the time."
Because, Sherlock is like the expert at solving crimes. Dr. Mortimer was one of the principle players in "The Hound of the Baskervilles", whose walking stick was found and shown to Holmes, who was able to deduce much about the man before seeing him. Mortimer needed help with addressing "The Baskerville Curse". :}
The ORIGINAL Sherlock Holmes stories were written by Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle.Though, there have been other writers who have had 'sub-stories' published or additional cases that follow the original Sherlock Holmes story, but were not written by the original author.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the one who wrote the books of Sherlock Holmes back at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the twentieth century, and he is long dead. However, films are still being made, notably the Sherlock Holmes film of 2009 which is to be followed by a sequel in December of 2011 and the BBC series "Sherlock", setting Sherlock Holmes in moder day London, was released in 2010 and the next series will follow in 2012.
They are what Sherlock Holmes refers to as the official police force. Consisting of boys who either live on the street or whose families are poor, the Baker Street Irregulars are the group Holmes uses to follow criminals, collect clues, and other things. He pays them for their work, just as if they were actual policemen.

An example of a pair of characters that serve as foils to each other is Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Sherlock Holmes is analytical, logical, and detached, while Dr. Watson is empathetic, compassionate, and more emotionally-driven. Their contrasting characteristics highlight each other's strengths and weaknesses throughout their investigations.

A false vocation is when you follow a path then you think it is not for you and change to another path. This might be because you might be unsure on what you need to do or don't know what God wants of you. If you are not interested in your job that you're doing or not dedicated, you have a false vocation and you find another path to go and find the right calling from god.
Holmes and Watson follow the other two to their hotel.
In speaking to the officer you would address them by their rank and name. In writing to the person you would follow the rank with the word "Retired" or "Ret."
Tony's mother wishes for him to become a priest in "Bless Me, Ultima." She believes that this would be a noble and honorable path for him to follow.
