His first recorded single was called Scarecrow,co-written with Bernie Taupin and released in 1967. It followed on from his time in his first band Bluesology, which became Long John Baldry's backing group in '66 and performed with him 16 times at London's Marquee Club (although he had been in a band called The Corvettes before this).

However, his first ever song to actually be sung is difficult to identify, as he began performing publicly at the age of only 15 in 1962 as a pianist at the Northwood Hills Hotel in London. He covered numbers by Jim Reeves and ray Charles, as well as some material he had written himself.
