Sherlock Holmes was a fictional character, he never lived. However the Sherlock Holmes stories are set in late Victorian London, around the 1890's. The stories themselves are a good source for a picture of London at this time.

The stories of Sherlock Holmes, written by Arthur Conan Doyle, were set in a time period between (approximately) 1880 and 1914. In this time period, there was very little travel by means of automobiles, which did not come widely into use until after WW II ended in 1945. So if you were to see the streets of London at the time of Sherlock Holmes, you would see horses, horse-drawn carriages, and foot traffic. You would see servants dressed in livery (that is to say, uniforms). Other than that, the function of streets remains much the same in that time as it does now; people travel from one place to another, sometimes they encounter other people whom they know or would like to know, there were stores where people would shop, and of course, a certain amount of crime. People could be robbed in stealth, by a pickpocket, or openly by a highwayman. Modern day muggers do much the same kind of thing. Such is the drama of the streets.
