∙ 14y agoThat completely depends on who/what you're asking. In the 1st show, his name was Orion Packs before he became Optimus Prime. In the Comics (War Within), he was always called Optimus, and the Prime was added when he became Autobot leader.

The first Primes:
The first primes built a solar harvestor on earth then the realized that the human race lived here. All of them but one agreed not to turn it on. The one who disagrred was Megtonimus1 Prime. A battle took place and the otheres all died Megtonimus1 went into hiding.
Optimus and Megatron.
Optimus Prime was Orion Pax before he became a prime. amd Megatron was Megtonimus2. They were friend and ruled (part of) Cybertron together. Sometime later, after the war had restarted, Orion Pax went to the planets core where Primus turned him into Optimus Prime. Megtonimus1 took Megtonimus2 as his protege. Megtonimus2 shortened his name to Megatron and beceme a Decpticon. They have been enimies since then.

Both Primes embody leadership, bravery and strength. Yet they are completely different characters with different personalities. Optimus, being the original Autobot leader contains the classic heroic and compassionate characteristics of an Autobot leader and commands the Autobot army with an authoritative yet respectful demeanor. Whereas Rodimus, previously "hot rod," tends to speculate more on his irrational decisions and tends to act before he thinks. This places him in a tough spot because the Autobots look up to him as a leader yet he looked up to Optimus so much that it makes him second guess himself which in turn makes him look weak, giving the impression that Optimus could be seen as , "better."
