Preston was NOT gay. Read his biography titled Robert Preston: Forever The Music Man. He was, however, a progressive, forward-thinking man who called out homophobia and held the belief that gay men were just regular men who happened to be attracted to men. He was presented with an award from the gay community after his portrayal of Toddy in Victor/Victoria. The fact that there are rumors about his sexuality speaks to his skill and range as an actor: he was a straight man who was able to convincingly play the part of a gay man.
