It is done to show respect for the tradition of the religion and some feel it helps keep your mind clear of outside influences while you are learning. scriptorium is from latin, means a room where writing is done. in ancient times there was no automatized book printing so all books were copied bu hand by monks in scriptoriums
Monks of the middle ages copied books by had, and in this way produced manuscript copies. This was the only way books were published at the time, and it was nearly always done by monks. The book they copied most was the Bible, but they did other works as well, and most surviving medieval literature was copied by monks at one time or another.

Present day monks do use computers, faxes, scanners, etc. Prior to the late 1960s there were no computers to use. Some writing (manuscripts and similar) is done as an art form. This presupposes that it is done by hand with pens and brushes. SOme orders of monks require a withdrawal from the world. These orders might use computers for record keeping but would not use the Internet which would bring the world into their monasteries.

They're both Catholic monks but live by different rules. Also the vow of silence isn't a permanent thing, and is usually done for a specific period of time. Or it might just be ironic.
