The milder controversy is the songs in the film were synthetic- and written for the film, which has a certain ( Chewy Chewy) distaste- when we have so much Rock and Roll from the Fifties which has survived- indeed given a new spin. the second angle was the usual subplots dealing with sex and possibly stolen cars- not G-rated entertainment. a song in the play has a girl singing- Look at Me, I"m Sandra Dee ( the actress was alive at the time)- I"m Lousy with Virginity! Bear in mind it was forbidden to even utter ( Virgin) except in a religious or historical, e.g. Virgin Queen- about Elizabeth I) in the fifties, when the play was set! Making out Virginity to be a comic disease is a no-laugher- to coin a phrase.
