Of his many film roles, his personal favorite was that of Ethan Edwards from The Searchers (1956). Wayne even went so far as to name his son Ethan after that character.

Great question. I remember an interview where he talked about his own movies. He couldn't just say one was his favorite, but there were a few that he was very proud of. Sands Of Iwo Jima which earned him an Oscar nod. He was very proud of True Grit, but then who wouldn't be. The Alamo, Wayne used most of his own money on the Alamo and it almost broke him financially, but he said he wouldn't have changed anything. He loved working with Maureen O'Hara, it's obvious that they just 'clicked'. They were life-long friends and always enjoyed each other's company.

Honorable mention:The Cowboys, Cahill, US Marshall, The Green Berets. The Quiet Man, The Shootist

Of course with a career as long as Wayne's this is an imcomplete list at best but it's interesting to hear what his picks were.

The key word here is "his." Which was John Wayne's favorite movie in which he had a role.
