I don"t know exactly, but it was some kind of prop akin to the trick maiboxes used in some television shows as a sort of bridge to coming attractions. One more or less educational show (Get On Board) used the forward smokebox of a locomotive to house the coming attractions, opened up ( with whistle sound effects) at the end of the show,. This would be most hazardous in real life as the area was under live steam on a real locomotive and was bolted shut externally anyhow. It might have been some sort of Disney-fied combination lock- I seem to recall the phrase Great Big Smile was tied into ( How we set the Mousekedial!) it was some sort of prop- probably used to announced coming attractions like the smokebox mail box mentioned before.
