The tragedy "Nicomède" is the very first play known to have been performed by Molière (January 15, 1622 - February 15, 1673) before the King of France.

Specifically, the play was by Pierre Corneille (June 6, 1606 - October 1, 1684). The King was not impressed with the performance. Additionally, the somewhat hostile audience was filled with members of the troop known as l'Hôtel deBourgogne, who were considered the expert players of that particular play and that particular genre.

But the King granted Molière's request to perform one of his own plays, the comic "Le Docteur amoureux." The King loved it, and Molière thereby was granted the honor of performing in the theater sponsored by the King's only brother, Philippe de France (September 21, 1640 - June 9, 1701).
