Yes, he did, but it was a rescue. While he was working on the set of Pete's Dragon remake, he kept noticing a horse tied to the fence near the highway. The horse was looking worse and worse each day. It appeared he had no food or water. Redford went door to door, but everyone denied that it was their horse. Since nobody would claim that it was their horse, and the horse was wasting away, he took it. He coordinated with a horse rescue, who came and picked it up.
In a TIME Magazine article written on December 17, 1979 by Richard Schnickel the horse that played Rising Star is Let's Merge. Robert Redford took ownership of the horse after the movie and actually did all of his own riding stunts in the movie
