The title of the first book in Britain and most of the world is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
The title was changed to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the US as the American editor didn't believe children would know what a philosopher was. Some other countries retained the change for this reason or because it was easier to translate.

When first published in the UK the title was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
