Before Disney California Adventure, directly across from Disneyland Park was the original Disneyland Parking lot, dating back to opening day, 1955. However, it was torn down and transformed into the then-called "Disney's California Adventure" in 2001. Along with the addition of the Downtown Disney District and two more Disney-owned hotels, this heralded the shift from "Disneyland" to the "Disneyland Resort" as we all know it today.

Can you go through the California adventure hotel to get to California adventure?
YES! You can...Anyone can enter Disney California Adventure Park through the Disney's Grand Californian Hotel (the one connected to DCA). You can also exit there too to avoid the front gate scramble...very helpful when there is a large crowd for a parade or performance at the front of the park. Once you go through the maze of the hotel you will be let out near the center of Downtown Disney...so if you want to go across to Disneyland, this may not be the best route.
