She was afraid of being alone, not being wanted for she was abandoned far too early in her childhood. Going from various orphanages took her sense of belonging away and misconstrued it into something corrupt. She philandered solely to feel the love given to her by a man whose intentions were were cursory. Even being involved with the CIA and mafia, put her life in a constant risk on top of the recluding feelings. Marilyn was immersed into a world that was dark, destructive, and destroying: enough for her to be afraid, I would say.
