He died when Severus Snape used Avada Kedavra on him in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It turned out that Snape killed Dumbledore upon Dumbledore's request. Dumbledore did not want Lord Voldemort to gain power of the Elder Wand, so he had a man that he trusted kill him so that Dumbledore would be the last true master of the wand.
Snape had been Dumbledore's man ever since Voldemort threatened Lily Evans life. Snape then begged Dumbledore to help protect her. In return Snape was to suggest to Voldemort that he pretend to join the Order of the Phoenix as a spy, in reality he was spying on the Death Eaters for the Order and only passing on select information to Voldemort.
