When she was working in the French hospital, La Maternity, she was called down early to treat a baby who's eyes were infected. Elizabeth was very tired, and when she sloppily began to treat the baby, a bit of the pinkeye liquid squirted into her eye. She was blind for weeks, but one eye gained its sight after a few weeks. The eye that had been affected never regained its sight, so Elizabeth's dream of being a surgeon was out of the question.
