He died at sea in the South Atlantic on his last voyage in 1592, some say from a broken heart- which seems unlikely, but perhaps from some disease linked to the terrible provisions the ships had store throughout the voyage: one suggestion is from ergotism, as he was somewhat paranoid and irrational in behaviour towards the crew.
