Talmage was admired by many in the church. He was a brilliant scholar in many fields including geography and the sciences. He taught science at BYU and later was president of the University of Deseret (later the University of Utah.) He also was a popular author among members of the Church. He was the author of several religious books such as Jesus the Christ, The House of the Lord, The Great Apostasy and The Articles of Faith.
