The Stroop Effect is a psychological phenomenon named after J.R. Stroop in the 1930s. In his experiment, Stroop found that people took longer to name the color of a word when the word itself referred to a different color. This effect has been widely studied and is used to investigate aspects of attention, automaticity, and cognitive control.
I think you are referring to the Stroop Test, named after John Ridley Stroop who reported his findings in 1935. Research had already been done in Germany in 1929, but Stroop's was the first report in English. He found that when subjects were shown words printed in different colors, and those colors differed with the actual colors of the print, reading is slowed down considerably. This effect has been studied extensively and the Stroop test has many practical uses. It helped scientists locate different brain functions and recognize how information processing and executive functioning interact (or not). The Stroop Test is also used to diagnose neurological disorders, for instance, after a stroke to determine which parts of the brain have been impaired. There are many practical uses for the Stroop Test: medical, psychological, neurological, learning style diagnosis. It also makes a fine fine T shirt. There is a fairly good summary about the Stroop effect on Wikipedia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroop_effect> . If you want more detailed information, it's out there. If you want to take the test yourself, just for the eye popping enlightenment of it all, here is a link to a simplified version: <https://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/words.html> .
