Nina Kulagina was one of the first Russian test subjects who demonstrated an apparently legitimate psychokinetic ability in the 20th century. This motivated the Russians to begin serious parapsychology research for wartime purposes. That in turn motivated the United States to investigate the use of psychic spies during the Cold War. In a real way, Kulagina's abilities were the beginning of these programs.
