Rurik was a man who took over Kievan Rus' (early Russia). He is thought to have been a Viking, probably from Sweden or somewhere else in that area. According to one school of thought, he, along with his two brothers and his entourage, attempted to take over Kievan Rus' but was overcome and driven off. However, the various towns in the area soon began to quarrel among themselves, and it wasn't long before they asked Rurik to return and rule them, which he did.
