Samuel Johnson lived 1709-1784.

He is probably best known for his "Dictionary of the English Language" in 1755. It became the authority on English words and spelling to such an extent that a Bill was thrown out of Parliament in 1880 because it used a word that had not been recorded by Dr. Johnson.
