That depends on what way you look at it. The manga was discontinued by Yoko Matsushita, so that storyline was never really developed. At the end of the anime it is implied that he in fact survived the events in Kyoto as the curse-lines on Hisoka have not disappeared, as would be expected in the event of Muraki's death. Unfortunately for YnM fans the answer to your question has never been properly answered, as we are not presented with any definitive proof of the doctor's death/survival :(
