When did Superman first appear?

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster wanted to create a superhero that was somebody with special abilities rather than just another ordinary person working against outlaws. They originally were going to make Superman a bad guy- but they got told it would be better if somebody who could not be stopped was fighting crime instead of causing it.
