He originally auditioned for the role of Sodapop Curtis (the middle Curtis brother), but the director of the movie being Francis Ford Coppola, he was also asked to read for Darrel Curtis (the oldest Curtis brother) and I believe Randy Adderson (the Soc.). In the end he got the part of Steve Randle (Sodapop's best friend), not a major character, but a character but one that's important to the story. The Outsiders was filmed in 1983.
