When did the BBC start and who was it founded by?

The British Broadcasting Company was formed in 1922 by a collective of several British and American companies. It obtained a licence from the GPO (The British Post Office that controlled radio transmissions). Later that year, Lord John Reith took up the post of managing director.

In 1927, the organisation was dissolved and replaced by the British Broadcasting Corporation. It was set up up under a royal charter as a public and non-commercial entity. John Reith became the first director of the new corporation. The BBC has remained an independent public organisation from that time onwards and has received its funding through radio and television licence fees paid by users of receivers ever since.
