in 1897 The first actual modern motion picture camera was designed by Louis Le Prince in 1888. However, Muybridge developed the process of using a series of still photographs to simulate motion for an experiment historically known as The Horse in Motion in 1878.

Mr. Muybridge invented stop motion studies for what we now calle Movies, not animation. Began with time and motion studies of horses, particulatily race horses proving at one point of the gallop all four heels are off the ground- in statuary this is a convention that the human rider died in field, such as Stonewall Jackson (with heis boots on) well at one point of the cycle all four are off the ground, and Muybridge was c orrect here. Horse racing was a favorite topic for early cinematographers as was boxing owing to the two minute rounds and two minutes for an average Horse race- The famous Trotter Dan Patch, ran the mile in l.55 sec so was sometimes styled Dan Patch l-5-5- nothing to do with the six-inch cannon. The Horse in Motion wasn't technically a movie, although it was an important predecessor. Muybridge's series of fifty still photographs (each separately triggered) was initially presented without animation.
